Patent Search Help

Here you can perform advanced searches of the USPTO's database using a simple form.  Achieve the specificity of Boolean searching without using a complex syntax.   Enter search terms box corresponding to fields you want to search.

Acceptable formats include:
  • Single words, e.g. lasers

  • Phrases in double quotes, e.g. "laser angioplasty"

  • Boolean phrases, e.g. laser or ophthalmoscope

Acceptable Boolean terms are:

  • and - laser and fiber  will retrieve only fields containing both the word "laser" and also the word "fiber"

  • or - the phrase "laser or fiber" will find patents that contain either "laser", "fiber" or both.

  • not - "laser not fiber" will find all patents that include "laser" in the field you specify, but then it will exclude all patents where "fiber" is in the searched field.

  • andnot - this term is interchangeable with "not".

Wild card searching is permitted:
  • use "*" for multiple letters, and "?" for 0-1 letters.
  • "electron*" finds electron, electrons, electronic, electronics, . . .; but "electron?" finds only electron and electrons (omit the double quotes from your entry.)

  • wild cards inside double quotes are not acceptable.

Notes:

  • You can copy the results of the search result directly into PatPDF.

  • Capitalization is ignored.

  • In the examples provided for each searchable term, pay attention to which examples include double quotes, and which don't.
